Balangoda Restoration Project: Volunteering for Rainforest Recovery in Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka's lush wet zone, near the historic town of Balangoda, an extraordinary ecological restoration effort is underway. The Balangoda Restoration Project, led by Rainforest Protectors of Sri Lanka, is transforming degraded lands into thriving rainforest ecosystems—and volunteers worldwide are invited to be part of this regeneration story.
This isn't typical volunteering. It's an immersive journey into ecological restoration, rural life, and the profound connection between people and the natural world.
Why This Matters
Sri Lanka's southwestern region is a globally significant biodiversity hotspot now threatened by decades of deforestation and unsustainable agriculture. The project reverses this damage through:
By rebuilding forest structure and ecological connectivity, the project restores biodiversity while strengthening water regulation, soil stability, and climate resilience.
Hands-On Impact
Volunteers directly participate in restoration: planting native species, maintaining plots, collecting seeds, preparing soil, monitoring progress, and learning tropical forest ecology. Every tree planted contributes to an ecosystem that will flourish for generations.
Immersive Living
Stay in simple eco-structures surrounded by forest, wildlife, and birdsong. Experience authentic rural Sri Lankan life through home-cooked meals, village farming, traditional knowledge, and genuine community connections.
Beyond fieldwork, explore hidden waterfalls, swim in rivers, hike forest trails, and spot wildlife in this region of natural beauty.
